Building STEPS
A college degree changes lives: Building STEPS (Science, Technology And Education Partnerships) equips our city’s brightest students with the tools to propel them to college and career success. Serving nearly 500 students and alumni each year, we accept high-achieving students who attend Baltimore’s more challenged public high schools. Beginning in 11th grade, progressive programming includes career exploration and immersion, college access, persistence and completion workshops, and ongoing support through college and the college-to-career transition. For our mostly low-income, first-generation college students, Building STEPS is their primary resource and safety net for college access and completion.
Nearly 80 percent of Building STEPS graduates become college graduates. Remarkable, given that only 8 percent of Baltimore’s public school students earn a college degree. Our college graduates return to Baltimore to start their careers, engage in their communities, and contribute to our city.
You can make a difference. Become a volunteer, writing advisor, or math tutor. Host a STEM seminar or summer intern. Coach a college graduate on career entry. Make a monetary gift. Together, we can continue to unlock student potential and ensure college and career success.
