Founded by Cara Baltimore, Divine Counseling LLC began with a mission to help individuals, especially BIPOC, who struggled with mental health disorders. The practice offers trauma-informed counseling to individuals, couples, and groups, in-person, and via telehealth. Divine Counseling also offers art therapy, mindfulness-based Reiki and yoga, EMDR therapy, and medication management that is CARF-accredited practice.

“We come from a holistic, human first perspective,” says Baltimore, “and meet each individual where they are.” In fact, Divine’s values are in its name:

D-Dedication
I-Improvement
V-Vulnerability
I-Integrity
N-Neighborly
E-Example

Baltimore explains that she “fell into” the field of therapy. While tutoring math as an undergraduate, she found herself assisting people with emotional regulation and navigating life changes along with exam anxiety and writer’s block. “Dealing with a very troubling childhood prompted me to feel deeply connected to others and to want to help them feel better,” says Baltimore. “During my undergrad, I worked part time as a rehabilitation counselor and worked directly in the community with underserved families helping them learn skills to keep them successfully in the community.”

Baltimore opened her private practice in 2021. Today, Divine Counseling has over 50 providers and 119 employees and is accredited as an Outpatient Mental Health Center (OMHC), a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP), and for Assertive Community Treatment (ACT). Through its five locations, Divine Counseling offers assistance with community housing, day treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, residential treatment, community employment services, job development, and respite services.

The organization is active in the community through its nonprofit arm, Faith With Works. Faith With Works empowers and uplifts the underserved, under-privileged, and under-represented in Maryland.

Baltimore says the work of helping people through trauma is a challenge, but one that is worthwhile. “It takes true heart, true patience, and true dedication to help each individual reach their highest self.”
