JA 18 Under 18
MAJA DURKOVIC
Civic action seems second nature to Maja. In 10th grade, she did all the legwork to create a Maryland High School Democrats chapter at her school. Under her leadership, the club thrived, becoming one of the largest and most respected in the school. She worked with peers in the Teenaged Republican Club to plan bi-partisan events, including a voter registration drive. Her advocacy doesn’t end there. As chief of staff of the Baltimore County Student Councils (BCSC), she’s created three new committees and proposed a bill in the Maryland General Assembly that would require Maryland schools to increase the diversity and inclusivity of the literacy materials. Maja is a member of the National Honor’s Society, first in her class, and was chosen for the Baltimore County Public Schools Outstanding Young Women Leaders program. She is described as a driven leader with an empathetic nature.
“Her commitment to civil leadership and her academic abilities only reveals one side of Maja…She has a collaborative and cooperative nature and values her relationships with her peers and adults.”—Jayme Harget, nominator
