SEBASTIAN MURPHY
On Scout camping trips, Sebastian, 10, was frustrated by a lack of running water while brushing his teeth. A lover of chemistry and solving problems, he jumped at the chance to solve this challenge. The Windsor Farm Elementary fourth grader researched mouth pH levels, gum properties, and cavities to create his invention— dental gum. In the AACPS Innovators of Science & Engineering Challenge, his innovation earned first place at his school and at the county, where he also took home the STEM award and Best in Show. The young entrepreneur currently is experimenting on how to recycle glow sticks and an alternative to traditional eating utensils. Sebastian blends scientific discovery with Scouting ideals, participating in annual Scout food drives, collaborating with Weems Creeks Baptist Church to gather food items for Annapolis’ Light House Shelter, volunteering at the Johns Hopkins Ronald McDonald House, and, for five consecutive years, placing wreaths on the headstones of military heroes at the National Cemetery in Annapolis through Wreaths Across America.
“Sebastian demonstrates creativity, perseverance, a willingness to learn, and dedication to tasks at hand.” — Shavaun T. Hawkins, teacher
