University of Maryland, Baltimore
CHANGING THE FUTURE TODAY
As an anchor institution in West Baltimore, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is committed to directly improving the quality of life in its surrounding communities. UMB honors this commitment by providing community outreach programs that benefit from its teaching, research, and clinical care and service missions.
CENTER FOR VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Aimed to stop violence at its source, this transformational center marshals the expertise and resources of the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and UMB’s schools of medicine, social work, and law. It works to conduct community-based participatory research, provide creative and impactful education, and inform and advocate for informed policies that will reduce violence and trauma in Baltimore.
PATIENTS PROGRAM
The School of Pharmacy’s PATIENTS Program provides an innovative bridge between the community and research. Using patient-centered outcomes research, the team gives patients a voice in their own care and lets them guide research in a way that ultimately improves that care for others.
SAFE CENTER FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING SURVIVORS
The Support, Advocacy, Freedom and Empowerment (SAFE) Center is the first systematic, university-based program to serve victims of human trafficking with comprehensive legal, social, economic empowerment, mental health, and medical services. The SAFE Center has leadership roles on state and county human trafficking task forces, and is an essential partner to Maryland government agencies, law enforcement, private industry, and nonprofit organizations.
THE MONDAWMIN HEALTH VILLAGE
UMB has joined forces with local stakeholders and the community to develop a comprehensive health care program for the Mondawmin and adjacent West Baltimore communities. At the heart of this initiative is the Mondawmin Health Village. This facility will provide medical, dental, and ancillary services, and utilize a team-based care model to engage all UMB schools and encompass faculty oversight to promote wellness, healing, and equity.
