In Sunday’s New York Times, the “36 Hours in Provincetown” piece mentioned that summer visitors might run into famous writers such as John Waters, Tony Kushner, Andrew Sullivan, and Michael Cunningham. It’s telling that Waters was ID’ed as a “writer”—his latest book, Carsick, just spent a few months on the Times’ bestseller list—but film has always been his calling card.
With that in mind, the Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced it will be showing all of Waters’ films from September 5-14. “Fifty Years of John Waters: How Much Can You Take?” will include rare screenings of Mondo Trasho and Multiple Maniacs, short films such as The Diane Linklater Story and Hag in a Black Leather Jacket, and guest appearances by the director, as well as films selected by Waters (“Movies I’m Jealous I Didn’t Make”).
“I’m beyond excited!” Waters said in a press release. “It took me fifty years to climb from the cinematic gutters of Baltimore to Lincoln Center. Finally, I’m filthy and respectable!”
