Eddie’s of Roland Park goes platinum this month, as the independent grocer fêtes its 70 anniversary. The much-loved market will kick off the landmark event with a week of celebrations at the 6213 N. Charles St. location from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event begins on Oct. 12 and runs through Oct. 18.
The weeklong festivities include free slices of Eddie’s signature sheet cake, Hale & Hearty Soups, and music, sparkling wine, and butlered hors d’oeuvres, as well as one-day anniversary specials throughout the week. (On Oct. 17, Berger Cookies will be sold at a reduced rate, for instance.)
The grand finale (Sat., Oct. 18 from noon to 4 p.m.) will highlight favorite vendors, including A. Kirchmayr (line up for hand-crafted chocolates), Saval Foods (for hot corned beef and pastrami sliders), Euro USA (for gourmet cheeses and charcuterie), and Zeke’s Coffee.
Owner Nancy Cohen, whose father started the business in 1944, fondly recalls, “As a little girl I’d sit in the window eating cookies,” says Cohen. “It was always such a treat to visit.”
These days, to keep things fresh, the Charles Street store, is getting a makeover. “We’re doing a complete remodel of the store,” explains Cohen, who joined the staff as a customer greeter in 1981. “We are looking for more of a feeling of openness, much of which can be accomplished with more efficient lighting. We are putting in all new freezer cases and meat cases and the bakery and cheese departments will have a total overhaul. At this point, eighty to ninety percent of the designs are done.”
Eddie’s success can best be explained by its loyal customer base. Says Cohen, “We have three and four generations of families shopping with us.”
