When Townhouse Kitchen + Bar closed last January, not many Harbor East regulars were surprised. The space inside was massive (8,000 square feet) and seemed to have a confused concept. The decor was part ski lodge and part industrial ’80s music video. The menu wasn’t very exciting and there were many more impressive dining options within walking distance.
This week, we saw new awnings go up for Mussel Bar & Grille—a rock-and-roll-themed chain restaurant owned by the Robert Wiedmaier Restaurant Group—which already has locations in Bethesda, Arlington, and Atlantic City.
As one might guess from the name, the menu is seafood driven with six mussel preparations, appetizers like calamari and crab dip, and entrees including a soft-shell crab and lobster roll. The Bethesda location features an impressive 135-bottle and 13-draft beer list with local offerings from DC Brau, DuClaw, and Flying Dog—as well as a custom-made Pilsner.
The challenge for Mussel Bar, of course, is standing out amongst the plethora of successful seafood spots in the area, including Thames Street Oyster House and Bertha’s just a stone’s throw away.
Reviews of the Bethesda location have been lackluster, with unfortunately disappointing mussels, but the innovative beer list, fresh side dishes, and house-made ingredients seemed to shine through.
Mussel Bar & Grille is set to open its waterfront location on Lancaster Street in January.
