This is our 38th year compiling our list of Baltimore’s best physicians.
While this list takes a monumental amount of effort to create, it is still only a small representation of the abundant medical skill we are fortunate to have in this region. In fact, we’ve been so impressed over the years by the many incredible medical advances that take place in little ol’ Charm City, that we decided to bring them all together in a compendium of medical marvels. In our feature story, “The City that Cures,” editors Jane Marion and Christianna McCausland take a deep dive into the many medical innovations upon which our world depends—all of which have roots in Baltimore. From surgical gloves to Dramamine, assistive devices for the blind to the discovery of HIV, you’ll be astounded by all this area has contributed to the healthcare field.
METHODOLOGY
To arrive at our results, we held open nominations on our website, where thousands of physicians nominated the peers they believe are preeminent in their fields. After nominations closed, a furious Excel number-crunch got us to our list, which we vetted to ensure that all doctors are licensed and in good standing. The list is never prescriptive but rather a dynamic reflection of the physicians nominated that year; one year we may have a large number of a particular specialty, the next year that specialty may not appear at all if we didn’t receive sufficient nominations in the field. Finally, we turned the list over to our panel of physician advisers whom we rely on for their professional expertise and inside intel on the medical community for final review. (Advisers are not eligible to be included on the list in the year they serve.)

THE CITY THAT CURES

Menopause Medicine/Women’s Health
Why did you choose to pursue menopause medicine?
During my first few years of practice after residency, I had many patients coming to see me for menopausal symptoms. These women suffered with severe life-affecting symptoms as well as morbidities that affected them for a third of their lives. As I researched information to help them, I found the field of menopause to be essential and deserving of emphasis in women’s health.
Why did you decide to start the Women’s Wellness and Healthy Aging Program at Johns Hopkins?
Midlife women are the “sandwich generation.” They are caretakers of their children, partners, and aging parents. While they shoulder all the responsibilities for their families, they often neglect their own medical needs. The Women’s Wellness and Healthy Aging Program (or as we fondly call it, “WWHAP”) was started to provide integrated Hopkins-quality medical care in an efficient manner.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
It is difficult to underestimate the impact menopause symptoms can have on a woman’s life—her sense of self, her moods affecting her relationship with her loved ones and colleagues, and her cognitive function affecting work. The best part of any day is when a patient comes in for a follow up appointment and says, “I’m back. I’m myself again.” —Casey Bacot

Dermatology
What’s your favorite part about working in dermatology?
I am able to care for patients of all ages—which allows me to take care of the whole family. I might see the parents for skin cancer screenings, the teenage daughter for acne, the toddler for eczema, and get to know the entire family over years of working with them to care for their skin.
What’s something unique you bring to the field?
I bring my outgoing, personable nature to the clinic every day to make patients feel safe and comfortable. This allows me to really connect with my patients. As a Black female dermatologist, I am also an expert in treating patients with skin of color.
What’s the most recent thing you learned on the job?
Everyone on the team has something to offer, independent of their years or experience (or lack thereof). Trust is earned, not gifted.
What’s one piece of health advice you wished people would pay more attention to?
I wish more people would treat their body like a temple. Wear sunscreen daily, avoid peak hours of the sun between 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and if a lesion is bleeding, enlarging, or causing pain, have it evaluated. —Olivia Borgula

Emergency Medicine
What do you bring to the field that’s unique?
I’m passionate about caring for patients and their families and incorporating them in the decision-making. Medicine is no longer patriarchal, where we just dictate to patients what the diagnosis and next steps are; we often discuss with patients the treatment options and we arrive at a treatment plan together.
What’s the hardest part about working in medicine?
It’s the unknown. You never know what’s coming in, in emergency medicine, so it keeps us always on our toes.
Can you describe a rewarding moment that reaffirmed your choice of profession?
I’ve had the opportunity to mentor a number of folks who have gone from starting with me to assistant directors to medical directors, and that’s been truly rewarding.
What advice do you have to someone who wants to go into medicine?
Remember why you went into it. There are certainly challenges. There’s long hours, but your initial intention was to care for people and to help guide families through some of their most difficult moments. —Olivia Borgula

Neurosurgery
Why did you choose to practice neurosurgery?
A combination of intellectual curiosity, a desire to help others, and a passion for the intricate and awe-inspiring workings of the human brain and spine. It’s a demanding field, but one that I find deeply fulfilling and wouldn’t trade for anything.
What do you find most fascinating about the human brain?
The neurons in our brain define who we are. Every thought, emotion, and action shapes our brains, making each one of us unique. The brain’s ability to change and reorganize throughout our lives is truly remarkable. Even after injury or disease, the brain can find new ways to function, forming new connections and pathways to compensate for lost abilities. The brain is truly a marvel of nature, and we are only just beginning to understand its full potential.
What keeps you motivated on challenging days?
Making a tangible difference in people’s lives. When a patient comes to me with a neurological condition, they often face significant challenges and uncertainty. Being able to offer them hope through diagnosis, treatment, and, ultimately, improved quality of life is incredibly rewarding. —Casey Bacot

PODIATRY
What drew you to podiatry?
I grew up doing carpentry, construction, and working with my hands, so I knew I wanted to be in a surgical specialty. When I shadowed a podiatrist, I saw how patients would come into the office or hospital having significant pain or trouble walking, and they would leave happy and able to get back to life. Podiatry truly is a hidden gem among the medical specialties and can make a huge impact on improving peoples’ lives.
What do you bring to the field of podiatry that is unique?
I am a board-certified histotechnologist having worked in a pathology lab for several years, which allows me to treat unique pathologies of the lower extremities, such as plantar fibromas, fragility fractures of the foot and ankle, necrotizing fasciitis, and other musculoskeletal pathologies.
Describe a moment that made you remember why you chose this profession.
I’m fortunate that I get to experience giving the gift of walking quite often in my profession. Every time I see a patient walking in, pain free and in the shoe wear of their choice after a significant injury, that reaffirms that I chose the right medical specialty. —Casey Bacot

Pediatric Ophthalmology
What advice do you have for someone who wants to go into medicine?
It’s a long haul, but the end result is entirely worth it. When deciding on a specialty, spend time with various providers in your field of interest to get a sense of the day-to-day routine, patient population, character of the field, and opportunity for work-life balance.
What do you bring to the field of pediatric ophthalmology that’s unique?
In addition to treating some of the more common conditions in pediatric ophthalmology, such as amblyopia, strabismus, and nasolacrimal duct disorders, I take care of pediatric patients with cataracts, which often involves surgery and specialty contact lens fitting.
What’s your favorite part about being in pediatrics?
I am in the position to treat not only young patients but to help the entire family from day one of a child’s life into early adulthood. I value being able to help educate a family on the specific relevant eye condition and offer guidance through the management and treatment. —Olivia Borgula
