The forecast calls for rain all day in New York, possibly tapering off around 9 pm.
Normally, in a situation like that, Major League Baseball would just go ahead and cancel the game. But there’s nothing normal about tonight.
Tonight, you see, is Derek Jeter’s last game in Yankee Stadium. Some tickets were sold for upwards of $800. Tonight was supposed to be the culmination of the 100-year season-long celebration of the Yankee’s beloved captain.
But what will MLB do if the game is rained out?
Technically, they could reschedule for Monday, but that’s not the normal protocol for a meaningless game. Under any other circumstances, they’d just cancel the game outright. But again, nothing normal here.
So…we’re in “wait and see process,” according to Orioles spokesperson Jeff Lantz, adding, “I wouldn’t expect any word until much closer to game time.”
The Orioles won’t say it, but we will: If they force our division champ Os to play an absurdly late game tonight, or an extra game on Monday when they could’ve had the day off to rest, the people of Baltimore will NOT be happy about it.
(For the record, if yesterday was Jeter’s last game at Yankee Stadium, he went 0 for 4 in a 9-5 loss.) #oops
Stay tuned.
