18th Annual Empty Bowls: Benefiting St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore
Saturday, April 20
4–7 p.m.
Maryland State Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall
Filling ceramic bowls with fare from 10 Baltimore-area restaurants was just one fun aspect of St. Vincent de Paul’s annual fundraiser. The event’s namesake bowls (all 600-plus attendees got to choose a handcrafted bowl to use that day and take home with them) are symbolic of the organization’s work to combat poverty, homelessness, and hunger in our community.
There was also a variety of entertainment—singers, dancers, and even a performance by a Taekwondo team—provided throughout the three-hour event, as well as a kid’s area filled with several games, play stations, and face painting.
But perhaps the biggest draw was the feeling that it gave folks about helping St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore’s work to provide support for area families in need. That certainly provided motivation for Mary Kmiencinski, who brought several friends with her to this year’s bash. “I’ve been coming since this [event] started,” she said. “My daughter was one [year old] when I came to the first one, and now she’s 19.”
