Five Tips to Maintaining Flawless Summer Skin

From radiant masks to hydrating moisturizers, add these basics to your summer routine.
By Marisa Haber

Summer in Charm City means sun, heat, and a whole lot of humidity. Keeping your skin fresh and sun-damage free can be a challenge if you don’t know which products and tricks ensure hydration and radiance. If you’re struggling with finding a summer beauty routine that’s easy and foolproof, then look no further. Here are some tips to take your summer skincare to the next level.

1. Know Before You Glow

Some may step out in the sun and immediately develop a beautiful, rich tan, but for those who want to speed up the process, knowing how to self-tan is a must. Remember to exfoliate before tanning so that it doesn’t turn out uneven or patch. Also, use a Vitamin-C mask to give your tan skin a glow from within. Finish off your look with a liquid or powder highlighter on top. Recommended Product: Tatcha Violet-C Radiance Mask ($68).

2. SPF in Moisturizer and Makeup

Sunscreen is key in the summer, and not just on your body, on your face, too. It can be easy to forget sunscreen on your face amongst all the other layers of makeup, so purchase a moisturizer or foundation that has SPF built in. You can also switch to a tinted moisturizer with SPF for a lighter layer of product on your face. Extra tip: Put on sunscreen underneath your makeup if you’re planning on taking some selfies or photos, the flash will hit the SPF and give you an unsightly ghost look. Recommended Product: Farmacy Honey Drop Lightweight Moisturizer ($45).

3. Misty Business-Facial Mists are a Must

Facial mists are trending right now, and for great reason. These spray bottles spritz out mist packed with ingredients your skin will love and it also does wonders for your makeup. Facial mists revive your look and are also a great item to keep in your purse so you can reapply on the go. Recommended Product: Tata Harper Clarifying Mask ($68).

4. Take a Cold Shower

Standing under cold water might not sound like the most fun—but bear with us. A cold shower can help hydrate your skin and tighten pores, while a hot shower can create a dehydrating effect. While you’re enjoying your cold shower, use a purifying cleanser to deep clean your pores after a day of makeup and sweat build-up. Recommended Product: boscia Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser ($20).

5. Water You Waiting For? Hydrate Your Skin

Once you get out of the shower, it’s important to keep that water nourishing your skin throughout the day. Try using a moisturizer that has hyaluronic acid—it’s the master at keeping skin quenched. Don’t fear all the moisturizing and hydrating—we promise it won’t break you out. There’s this idea not to hydrate your skin during the summer for fear of making it oily, but it’s important to remember that oil and water aren’t the same thing. Recommended Product: Youth To The People Fresh Pressed Superfood Skin Set ($54).
